The Medical Classroom B-03W was leaking at the northeast corner of the ceiling for many years. The majority of the structural slab ceiling is underneath a vaulted sidewalk, from the street curb to the building line.
Because there is no waterproofing membrane on the exterior side of the street curb foundation wall, below the asphalt, rainwater could easily migrate through the interface between the steel street curb and the asphalt. The cost involved in excavating below the street, even just 3 ft. below the asphalt, to waterproof the exterior side of the foundation wall to the curb, would be very expensive.
CGI Northeast performed injection waterproofing through the interior side of the structural slab. The resulting gel formation was witnessed to penetrate through the asphalt interface, at the street level above. This signified that the main entry point was sealed off, full depth with the gel, and the rainwater infiltration was eliminated. Also, additional injections were performed through the interior side of the foundation wall. As a result, an impermeable gel membrane was created within the vaulted structural sidewalk slab and street curb foundation wall cracks, and on the exterior side below the asphalt. This work was performed in May of 2009 and the NYU Management has not reported any water leakage since then.
